Featured Property: Loma Pinta Ranch, McMullen County, TX 78072

Loma Pinta Ranch
This ranch is prime hunting ground for trophy whitetail deer.
Loma Pinta Ranch lies in the South Texas plains. The 282-acre property is located in the southwestern area of McMullen County, which has a population of 802. The county itself is the richest county in America, due primarily to the royalties oil and gas companies pay to extract oil shale from land owned by locals.

As a ranch, however, Loma Pinta is best known as prime hunting ground for trophy whitetail deer, a species bred with native and introduced genetics and which feed on high-quality brush abundant on the property. (Learn about hunting regulations in Texas here.)

The rolling terrain creates spectacular views all around, with a pond being an additional feature of the property.

More ranch features

The double-wide mobile home that comes with the ranch has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Water collection systems on the property include a 3,000-gallon cistern for the house. It collects water from the double-wide home’s entire roof and a 1,000-square foot porch basin.

Three other 1,500-gallon cisterns are located farther across the ranch. They are filled once a year, providing a water source for the local wildlife through connected troughs.

The vast expanse offers plenty in terms of agricultural and recreational potential.

Climate

The property benefits from a humid subtropical climate, which is generally characterized by sunny weather throughout the year. The average number of days with measurable precipitation is 38, with the location receiving 26 inches of rain per year (the US average is 39 inches). Temperatures can reach up to 97 degrees in the summer months, and drop to 43 degrees in January.

How to get there

From US Route 59 (US 59) and US Route 281 (HWY 281) in George West, head south on US 59 for 20 miles. Turn right onto the FM-624 highway and continue for 12 miles. Take a left on San Diego Road, then watch for the entrance on your left in approximately 3 miles.

McMullen County comprises former sections of neighboring Bexar County, Atascosa County, and Live Oak County. Its county seat is Tilden.

Although the average gross income of residents is a whopping $303,717 a year, the people who live in the county remain modest and unassuming. They spend their money on home repairs or build additional structures on their land so that their adult children can come home and raise their own families.
